If you want to have a formative hand in shaping the future, you have to understand the present and learn from the past.

    Straßenbahndepot

A landmark building more than a century old, the Bornheim streetcar depot was decommissioned when Frankfurt overhauled its public transportation network. The hall was later revived as a roofed marketplace for a major supermarket chain. Construction crews dismantled the entire depot, including the historic outbuildings, at great expense. The steel girders and arches were painstakingly restored and reassembled on site atop a newly built underground car park. The building's legacy structure had to be adapted to current load-bearing and energy efficiency requirements. Doing so without any visible modifications proved to be an unexpected challenge.

This engineering effort succeeded: Despite its repurposing, the Bornheim depot's hall has been so faithfully preserved that it remains part of the Route of Industrial Heritage. Even the venerable buildings for the tramline workers have been integrated into the ensemble.

They now house a café and apartments. This award-winning project sets an example for the preservation of historical monuments, vividly demonstrating how buildings from a bygone era can be adapted with remarkable success.

Architecture is one of the fine arts. Our planning office attaches great value to the role of art in the public domain. This commitment is expressed not only in our efforts to preserve, restore and revitalize buildings of historic and architectural value. We also afford access to works of contemporary art at public places that are open to everyone. In some cases, works of art are acquired for the purpose of displaying them in or near suitable buildings for a wider audience to behold. In others, prominent artists are commissioned to handle the entire creative process from the inceptive design to its implementation.
