    Riedbergzentrum

Frankfurt has been putting plans for its biggest residential construction project, the Riedberg quarter, into action since 2009. This vast housing area is designed to accommodate many people. These residents need a local convenience shopping center, as do the students and employees of the neighboring Johann Wolfgang Goethe University departments.

The idea behind the Riedbergzentrum, one of the quarter's first projects, was to build a shopping center with the capacity, but not the look and epic scale, of a mall. Instead, it was to be sectioned into smaller units that blend in nicely with the new quarter. Hence, three architectural firms were tasked to plan parts of the building complex. The result of their teamwork is a blend of diverse styles lacking any trace of a megamall's uninviting monumentality.

This shopping/living area accommodates 6,000 m² of retail space, a medical center, restaurants and many apartments. Set in an open urban square, the ensemble harmonizes well with the quarter's vistas.

Architecture is one of the fine arts. Our planning office attaches great value to the role of art in the public domain. This commitment is expressed not only in our efforts to preserve, restore and revitalize buildings of historic and architectural value. We also afford access to works of contemporary art at public places that are open to everyone. In some cases, works of art are acquired for the purpose of displaying them in or near suitable buildings for a wider audience to behold. In others, prominent artists are commissioned to handle the entire creative process from the inceptive design to its implementation.
